1st out of 2 special BJSM issues following the London 2012 Games

Intoduction

Supported by the IOC, a new special issue of the British Journal of Sports Medicine - Injury Prevention & Health Protection (BJSM IPHP) is just released focusing on research conducted under the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

We still remember the London Games as one of the most exciting sports events ever. The Olympic Games was an unqualified success, and the coverage of the Paralympic Games was unprecedented, the crowds of paying and watching public record breaking.

A must-read for every sports and exercise medicine professional

This 1st out 2 special BJSM IPHP issues following research initiatives undertaken during the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics covers a wide range of topics:

- from injury & illness surveillance projects,

insights into the polyclinic work, eye care and pharmacy services,

to new research from so-called high risk sports, such as boxing, taekwondo, and downhill biking.

The role of the IOC and IPC is to establish evidence-based knowledge, support research and disseminate the knowledge throughout the world of sports in cooperation with the international and national sports federations.

Editor´s choice

The heart of this issue is no doubt the presentation of data from the 2 comprehensive injury & illness surveillance projects conducted in London by the IOC and IPC, respectively.

Systematic injury & illness surveillance is a fundamental pre-requisite to athlete health protection.

At least 11% of the Olympic athletes incurred an injury during the Games and 7% an illness with no sport turning out as of particular high-risk.

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) conducted their first injury & illness surveillance study among Paralympic athletes at Summer Games. Injury and illness rates were comparable to Olympic athletes and with respiratory illnesses as most common. A high rate of upper limb injuries in this cohort will need further attention in the prevention work.

Healthcare challenges at the Olympic Games

Enjoy the 2 warm-ups: “Health care challenges at the Olympic Games” by the CMO of the London Games Dr. Richard Budget and “London 2012 Paralympic Games: bringing sight to the blind?” by Dr Nick Webborn.

These special issues of the British Journal of Sports Medicine - Injury Prevention and Health Protection (4 issues per year) are edited by Prof. Lars Engebretsen, Head of the Scientific Activities in the IOC, and Dr. Kathrin Steffen, OSTRC.
