Description

Intro: Posterior pelvic tilt in back squatting may increase the risk of low back injury.

Aim: This study had three aims: 1) to quantify spine flexion during back squats in young recreational athletes, 2) to investigate our ability to identify subjects with high and low degree of pelvic tilt, and finally 3) to investigate the effect of foot stance on posterior pelvic tilt, and segment kinematics during the squat.

Method: Seventy-eight subjects were recruited for a subjective assessment of posterior pelvic tilt while performing back squats. Subjects were subsequently categorized into three groups: excessive-, medium-, and no posterior pelvic tilt. Forty-three subjects from the excessive- and no posterior pelvic tilt group completed a second session, consisting of a 3D motion analysis performing squats in three different foot positions: narrow stance (NS), narrow stance on a wedge (PS), and wide & externally rotated (WS).
