Description

The number of alpine skiing injuries is increasing, and is together with soccer and team handball one of the three largest groups of sports injuries in Norway.
Injury registration is proved to be effective to identify areas with high injury incidence Black spots (Ytterstad, 1995). Black spots in alpine venues can be identified if the place of injury is carefully registered. When these black spots are identified, it is possible to make interventions to reduce the number of injuries.

The key to identify black spots is a registration of the exact place of injury. Both paper based methods and methods based on electronically digital maps have been used in Norway to identify black spots in road accidents. Paper registrations have been carried out in alpine venues.
Modern database technology and GPS (Global Positioning System) can optimise this type of registrations in alpine venues.
We want to develop a registration system based on digital maps, GPS and injury registration done by the ski patrol/physician/hospital.
A pilot project is planned in the Tyin-Filefjell alpine centre. Collected injury data will be used to improve/secure the area to prevent and reduce the number of injuries.
If the experience with the method is good it will be implemented in other alpine venues in Norway.
