Description

A significant proportion of female elite handball players have previously injured an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and returned to sports after surgery and rehabilitation. It is uncertain whether these players are fully rehabilitated, and whether they after return to active handball game differ from the non-injured players.

The aim of this project is to investigate differences in strength and movement patterns between earlier ACL-injured and non-injured female elite handball players.

Methods

We use data from a prospective cohort study initiated to determine risk factors for ACL-injuries (ACL risk factor study). The study includes the entire female elite series in handball and the first round of testing was conducted in 2007. Players will be compared with respect to isokinetic thigh strength, isometric hip strength, legpress force and knee angles and moments from a drop jump test in our biomechanics lab.

This study will have implications for future rehabilitation and injury prevention for ACL-injured handball players and other athletes.
