Background: Although handball is a contact sport with a high risk of acute match injuries, their mechanisms or the referee decisions in injury cases have not yet been investigated.
Aim: Describe the mechanisms of acute injuries using video analysis and evaluate match referee performance in elite male handball.
Methods: Based on the injury surveillance from the 24th Men´s handball world championship in 2015, injury situations and the referee decisions were identified on video footage, utilizing the video analysis software Prozone. A total of 55 injury situations and 37 referee decisions were included for analysis. The injury situations were analysed individually by five handball experts, followed by a consensus meeting. An expert referee panel performed individual blinded evaluation of the referee decisions, followed by an online consensus meeting. Their decisions were compared to the match referees
Implications: The results will provide information regarding acute injury mechanisms and in which playing situations these injuries occur. In addition, the results will provide information regarding the referee’s performance in relation to real acute injury situations and if stricter refereeing should be addressed as a possible intervention to prevent acute injuries in elite handball.
